Roman
bridge with stone arches. Despite having lost its stone sides and some
of its arches, this bridge adds charm to this area. The military posts
which frame it on the south side still have Roman inscriptions on them.
For a complete view of the bridgework make your way to the lovely
riverside garden. |
Igreja da Misericórdia
The façade of this small 17C Baroque
building is embellished with balconies and wreathed columns. The inside,
covered with azulejos depicting scenes from the Bible and scenes of Jesus'
life, contains a large retable in gilded wood.

Castelo de Monforte
The first castle was built in this place
during the times the Celts inhabited this part of the Peninsula. The
Romans and the Moorish have been there. Seeing that Monforte was extremely
important for the defence of the border with Castile, D. Dinis had the
castle rebuilt, adding 4 towers and increasing the fortified wall. |

Forte de S. Francisco
Its building began in
1640 and it ended in 1662. Besides the fort, some fortified walls to
connect the fort to medieval walls (which were reinforced in some cases
and even rebuilt in others) were also built. In the Fort you can visit
“Igreja de S. Francisco” (St Francis Church).
